Ownership and current planning permission
The site is owned by a local businessman and director of the Thornbury Crematorium Ltd. Part of the 7.5 acre site already has planning permission for a cemetery, granted in 1997 as part of the phase 2 and 3 future expansion of the existing cemetery. A site plan showing the boundary of the land is shown below.
The aging population is increasing both nationally and locally, especially for those aged over 75 years old. As a result, Thornbury Crematorium Ltd believes a local cremation facility for local people is needed and would be welcomed.
The fields on Thornbury Hill could provide an ideal location for a new sensitively designed, state of the art crematorium. This tranquil setting, with views across the surrounding countryside, could provide a tranquil environment for local people to visit and remember their families and friends for generations to come.
The site is well screened, has access directly off the Alveston Hill road (B4061 between the A38 and Thornbury town centre).
The strip of land to the right of the existing cemetery will not be developed as part of the crematorium, but planted as a wild cemetery.
Nationally, the demand for cremations has increased from approximately one third in 1960 to nearly 75% today (see table 1 above), meaning there is increased pressure on existing facilities.
